Elizabeth HoodYouth Represent!
By Elizabeth Hood

My interest in environmental activism really started when it became apparent to me that, as a young person, I have a huge stake in the future quality of the environment—in the world that we all call home.

Do Something
I joined a local environmental group in my community. The local chapter of the Sierra Student Coalition (SSC) was a great starting point for getting involved in the issues that concern me.

We decided to join the Paper Campaign, an effort to get a major office store to provide more recycled goods to its consumers. We then encouraged students to buy only recycled paper and other recycled school products. This important and successful effort emphasized the power we have in making smart, sustainable consumer choices.

Speak Your Mind
I also attended a legislative lobbying workshop. SSC did an amazing job of informing us about both local and national issues. I then traveled to my state capital, Annapolis, to meet with my state legislative representatives in the Maryland House of Delegates. I expressed my views about pending legislation and causes, such as the protection of a local forest and extending the purple line in order to have easier metro access in the suburbs.

The delegates were very pleased to see teenagers who cared enough to learn about the issues and who would give up their free time to travel to the state capital to lobby them! Being surrounded by other students who exuded passion for the same issues that surrounded me really gave me a sense of the importance each student can make.
