One big effect of a weak economy is that school budgets across the country are being cut. This can lead to cuts in music programs, sports teams, and even library books.

Some schools are saving money in a different way. A company named Destination Conservation has helped schools save money on energy use and garbage collection.

Destination Conservation teaches school building mangers to add up how all the energy is used in the school. Next, the company recommends installing energy-saving items such as efficient showerheads and compact fluorescent light bulbs.

Destination Conservation has saved schools more than $3 million. One school board saved more than $700,000 over 5 years. That's enough to buy new instruments and to support a sports team!
