The 25 million U.S. tweens spend an estimated $35 billion every year

Your favorite sitcom character is drinking the same soda that you do. On the show he always holds it with the brand name facing you. This is called:
a coincidence
product placement
free advertising

It All Adds Up
Your Power | Advertisers Love You

A video game - $50

A pair of jeans - $40

A CD - $15

Going to the movies - $10

Throw in a few more dollars for snacks each week and it still doesn't seem like much. Maybe you spend a few hundred dollars each year. So do your friends. And what about everyone else at your school? Keep adding everything up and pretty soon we're talking about some real money.

Not only do you spend your own money, you also represent a larger pool of dollars. You influence what your family buys. (For example, who picks the cereal?)

Also, you have a lot of spending years ahead of you. Corporations want you to pick their brand now in hopes that you'll stick with them through those future years.

Altogether, young people in the United States spend or influence the spending of $300 billion a year, or about 1 in 3 consumer dollars spent. That's not pocket change. It shouldn't surprise you, then, that corporations are targeting you with their advertising.
