You spend more than 1,000 hours a year at your school, but how much do you really know about the place? Do you know what kind of heating system it has? What kinds of light bulbs? Whether or not the building is insulated?

Those were just some of the questions that students at Mother McAuley High School in Illinois asked as they began a school-wide energy audit. A team of more than 90 students figured out how much energy the school was using and how it could use less. They looked at lighting, heating, cooling, and overall building efficiency.

The students discovered that the school could dramatically cut back on energy consumption with just a few changes in electricity use and ventilation. In fact, making these changes would save the school $47,000 over the next five years!

The team didn't stop there. They also decided to create a workbook for other schools that showed how they too could save energy—and money—by conducting a school energy audit.
