According to Environmental Defense (ED), very few catalog companies use recycled paper. Recycled paper has the same cost, quality, and availability as new paper.

If all U.S. catalog companies switched to the least expensive recycled paper (with 10 percent recycled material), the amount of wood saved would be enough to build a six-foot fence across the United States seven times!

Change may be in the works. In 2002, thousands of consumers emailed catalog companies to encourage them to switch to recycled paper. Thousands more thanked the companies that already used recycled paper, such as Norm Thompson, The Disney Catalogue and Early Winters.

A large number of catalog companies responded, and many suggested that they were going to switch to recycled paper.
