Like most people, Zach liked buying new, brand-name clothes. But then he learned that many of those clothes are made in sweatshops—factories where people, including children, work in dangerous conditions and get paid very little for their efforts. (See also, "Spreading the Word About Sweatshops.")

Zach fought back. He began buying his clothes in thrift shops. This saved him money—and kept money out of the hands of companies that sell clothes made in sweatshops.

Buying at thrift shops is "a cheap way to get the thrill of new things without having to actually buy them new," says Zach. "The thrill wears off just as fast if you buy the stuff new or used, so why not go for the used?"
