As consumers, youth have choices and power. By being a smart consumer, you can help influence businesses, your friends, and your family—and help protect the planet and other people. This contest let young people voice their opinions about being smart consumers.

I Buy Different Baltimore is part of Be, Live, Buy Different—Make a Difference, a national initiative from World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and the Center for a New American Dream. The goal of the program is to help young people understand how their consumer choices affect the environment and how they can make a difference by buying differently.

The artists featured here are from middle schools and youth centers throughout Baltimore, Maryland. All songs, raps, and spoken word pieces were written and performed by youth aged 10-15 years old. Participants prepared by attending educational programs using a Smart Consumers educational toolkit and hip hop workshops with local rapper, MC Ogun, to learn about writing and performing. Afterwards, they wrote and performed original pieces as part of this contest.

This program was made possible through the vision and generosity of the David and Lucile Packard Foundation.
